Canada’s remarkable World Cup journey faces its toughest test yet as the co-hosts take on Morocco in Houston, with a place in the quarter-finals at stake. Jesse Marsch’s side are chasing history by reaching the last eight for the first time, while the Atlas Lions are determined to continue the momentum that saw them become Africa’s first World Cup semi-finalists in 2022.

Canada booked their place in the Round of 16 with a dramatic 92nd-minute winner against South Africa, claiming their first-ever victory in a World Cup knockout match. After dominating much of the contest, Marsch’s men were rewarded for their persistence and now have the opportunity to become the first nation since 2002 to win each of their opening two World Cup knockout ties.

The Canadian head coach has described the encounter as a “free hit” for his players, who will be buoyed by winning two of their last three matches in Houston. However, this represents their biggest challenge of the tournament, with Canada having lost all four of their previous World Cup matches against teams ranked inside FIFA’s top 25.

Morocco also required late heroics to secure their place in the last 16, scoring a dramatic 91st-minute equaliser against the Netherlands before prevailing 3-2 on penalties. The Atlas Lions have now gone nine matches unbeaten since the Africa Cup of Nations final, recording six wins and three draws during that run.

Having reached the semi-finals in Qatar four years ago, Walid Regragui’s side know exactly what it takes to succeed in knockout football. They have progressed from six of their last eight knockout ties at major tournaments and have already shown they can overcome CONCACAF opposition, having defeated Canada during the 2022 World Cup group stage.

History is firmly on Morocco’s side heading into this contest. Canada have faced only two nations more often without ever recording a victory than Morocco, with the head-to-head record standing at one draw and three defeats.

Canada have been creating plenty of opportunities throughout the tournament, registering seven or more shots on target in three of their four World Cup matches. Their finishing has been less convincing, though, with the South Africa victory the only time they have scored more than once in their last seven World Cup outings.

Morocco’s defensive resilience has been a hallmark of their recent success. They have conceded just two of the eight penalties they have faced in World Cup shoot-outs, while only one of their six World Cup matches beyond the group stage has produced more than 2.5 goals.

Stephen Eustáquio will once again be one of Canada’s key figures after scoring the dramatic winner against South Africa. Interestingly, each of his last three international goals has arrived after the 65th minute, highlighting his ability to influence matches in their closing stages.

For Morocco, Achraf Hakimi continues to be one of the tournament’s standout performers. The Paris Saint-Germain full-back could become the first African player to make 15 World Cup appearances and has contributed five goal involvements across his last seven international matches, scoring once and providing four assists.

Canada have only one notable absentee in midfielder Ismaël Koné, while Alphonso Davies could be handed his first start of the tournament. Morocco may be without defender Chadi Riad after he limped off during the victory over the Netherlands.

Although Canada have impressed with their energy, attacking intent and home support, Morocco’s greater experience, defensive organisation and superior quality in the final third could ultimately prove decisive. The Atlas Lions have consistently demonstrated their ability to perform on the biggest stage and look well placed to edge another tightly contested knockout encounter.
