Victor Wembanyama has committed his long-term future to the San Antonio Spurs after signing a new multi-year contract extension, declaring to fans, “I’m here to stay. Whatever it takes.”

The Spurs officially announced the agreement on Friday by sharing footage of the signing across their social media platforms, confirming that the franchise cornerstone will remain in San Antonio for years to come.

According to ESPN, the extension is a five-year rookie maximum contract worth $252 million. The deal also reportedly includes a player option for the final season.

Earlier in the day, the 22-year-old French star hinted at the announcement by posting a heartfelt message to the “Spurs family” on X, reinforcing his commitment to the organization.

Wembanyama enjoyed an outstanding campaign in 2025-26, averaging 25.0 points, 11.5 rebounds, 3.1 assists, a league-leading 3.1 blocks, and 1.0 steal per game. His performances helped guide the Spurs to a 62-20 regular-season record—the second-best mark in the NBA—and an impressive run to the NBA Finals.

During San Antonio’s playoff journey, the Spurs eliminated Portland, Minnesota, and Oklahoma City before falling to the New York Knicks in the championship series.

The French phenom was unanimously named the NBA Defensive Player of the Year after establishing himself as one of the league’s most dominant two-way players. While the Finals defeat was a disappointing end to the season, his decision to remain with the Spurs provides a major boost for the franchise and its supporters.

ESPN also reported that Wembanyama chose not to trigger the higher “supermax” salary escalators, opting instead for a 25% salary increase rather than 30%. The decision gives San Antonio greater financial flexibility under the NBA’s salary cap, allowing the club to strengthen the roster around its superstar as it pursues an NBA championship.

Wembanyama’s decision mirrors similar sacrifices made by Spurs legend Tim Duncan and, more recently, New York Knicks star Jalen Brunson, both of whom accepted team-friendly contracts that gave their franchises greater financial flexibility to build championship-calibre rosters.

Across his first three NBA seasons, the French sensation has averaged 23.4 points, 11.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 3.5 blocks, and 1.1 steals per game, cementing his place among the league’s elite young talents.

Since being selected with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, Wembanyama has transformed San Antonio’s fortunes. The Spurs won just 22 games during his rookie campaign before improving to 34 victories the following season. They then enjoyed a remarkable breakthrough, finishing with a 62-win record and emerging as genuine title contenders.

San Antonio’s playoff run included a stunning upset over defending champions the Oklahoma City Thunder before the team’s championship hopes ended with a defeat to the New York Knicks in the NBA Finals.

Despite the disappointment of falling short on the biggest stage, Wembanyama made it clear his focus is already on returning to the Finals.

“It has been a hell of a year in terms of experience,” he said after the Knicks secured a 4-1 series victory in June.

Reflecting on the defeat, the 22-year-old admitted one of the toughest realities is the long wait before getting another opportunity to compete for the title.

“There’s probably a hundred games before we can be back in the Finals,” Wembanyama said. “It’s painful, but I’m not running away from that. I’m using it to fuel me.”
