Malta record mixed fortunes on Day 7 of Commonwealth Games in Glasgow

Malta’s athletes were in action in athletics and lawn bowls on Day 7 of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, with several closely contested encounters producing both encouraging performances and narrow disappointments.
Athletics
Gina McNamara competed in the women’s one-mile event, stopping the clock at 4:48.33 to finish 10th.
McNamara stayed with the leading group through the opening kilometre as the race developed at a strong pace. However, a decisive move with around one and a half laps remaining proved difficult to match.
The Maltese athlete continued to fight until the finish but was unable to respond to the acceleration of the leading runners, completing a determined performance outside her national record.
Jared Micallef was also in action in the men’s 800 metres semi-finals after impressing in the heats earlier in the Games.
Competing in a highly competitive second semi-final, Micallef committed himself to the demanding early pace and passed the 400-metre mark in 50.9 seconds.
He continued to push through the closing stages, but the leading athletes produced another increase in pace around the final bend and into the home straight. Micallef eventually finished in 1:48.24, with all the athletes ahead of him recording times faster than his national record.
Lawn bowls
Connie Rixon enjoyed a dramatic start to her women’s singles campaign, defeating the Falkland Islands in a tie-break to claim her first victory of the Games.
Rixon dominated the opening set, winning 10-4, but the Falkland Islands responded in the second set, producing crucial final bowls on several ends to edge it 5-4 and force a tie-break.
The deciding set proved equally tense. Rixon held two shots before the Falkland Islands appeared to claim the shot with their third bowl. However, following an official measure, the decision went Malta’s way, allowing Rixon to take the shot and ultimately the tie-break.
Rixon later faced Australia’s Ellen Fife in another tightly contested encounter.
Both players produced high-quality bowls throughout, matching each other almost shot for shot. The opening set ended 5-5, with neither able to establish an advantage.
The second set remained finely balanced and went down to the final end. Rixon needed three shots to win the set outright or two to force another tie-break. Despite her best efforts, she could only claim one, losing the set 6-5.
In the men’s pairs, Shaun Parnis and Troy Lorimer suffered a narrow defeat against Jersey despite making an excellent start.
The Maltese pair dominated the opening set, winning 5-1 with a confident display. They also started the second set strongly, but Jersey fought back to take it 4-3 and level the match.
The tie-break was closely contested, with both pairs producing quality bowls, but Jersey ultimately prevailed 2-0 to secure the victory.
