Joao Fonseca withdraws from US open with abdominal injury

Brazilian tennis star Joao Fonseca has withdrawn from the US Open due to an abdominal injury, the 20-year-old confirmed on Instagram on Monday, adding to the growing list of notable absentees from the men’s singles draw.

Ranked 26th in the world, Fonseca had been one of the players to watch at Flushing Meadows following his impressive run to the French Open quarter-finals earlier this year.

During that run, the Brazilian produced a major upset by defeating Novak Djokovic before also overcoming Casper Ruud.

“After undergoing tests and starting treatment for my abdomen, it became clear to me and my team that I need more time to fully recover so I can compete at a high level,” Fonseca said.

“It was not an easy decision to make, as it is a very special tournament for me. We’ll keep working hard so I can come back as soon as possible.”

Fonseca’s withdrawal is the latest blow to the US Open men’s singles field, with several other high-profile players also forced to pull out through injury.

World No. 1 Jannik Sinner and British star Jack Draper withdrew from the tournament last week, while former world No. 4 Holger Rune will also miss the Grand Slam.

The US Open men’s singles main draw is scheduled to begin on Sunday.
