JYP beat Hämeenlinna to keep their Liiga Championship hopes alive

JYP beat Hämeenlinna to strengthen their Liiga Championship hopes
JYP kept themselves firmly in contention for the Liiga championship after securing a hard-fought 3-2 home victory over Hämeenlinna, earning three valuable points in Finland’s tightly contested top-flight ice hockey competition.
Although JYP have alternated between wins and defeats across their last six games, their latest victory lifted them to seventh place in the standings. More importantly, they remain just three points behind the league leaders, with between one and three games in hand on every team above them.
The result keeps JYP well within reach of the leading pack as the race for the Liiga title continues to intensify.
Torgersson Gives JYP the Early Advantage
JYP made their breakthrough late in the opening period, with Daniel Torgersson finding the net on the power play with just over three minutes remaining.
The goal gave the hosts a 1-0 lead in an evenly contested encounter, with both teams creating opportunities to score. Despite further power-play chances for either side during the second period, neither team managed to change the scoreline before the second intermission.
JYP therefore entered the third period holding a narrow advantage, knowing they would need to maintain their defensive discipline to secure the victory.
Three Third-Period Goals Decide the Contest
The game burst into life in the third period when Oskari Kuusisto equalised for Hämeenlinna seven minutes after the restart.
However, JYP responded quickly. Just three minutes later, Reece Newkirk restored the home side’s lead, putting the hosts back in front at a crucial stage of the contest.
As Hämeenlinna pushed for another equaliser, JYP strengthened their position late in the game when Atte Ohtamaa scored into an empty net to make it 3-1.
The visitors managed to find the net once more in the final minute, with Brendan Ranford scoring a consolation goal. However, it proved too late to change the outcome, as JYP held on for a 3-2 victory.
Hämeenlinna Struggle to Maintain Their Momentum
The defeat continued a disappointing spell for Hämeenlinna, whose recent results have slowed their progress in the Finnish Liiga.
After beginning the month with four consecutive victories, the team have managed just one win in their last four matches.
They remain 11th in the standings, facing increasing pressure from the teams below them as the battle for play-off qualification develops.
With Hämeenlinna having played more games than the sides chasing them, the team have limited room for further setbacks if they hope to strengthen their position.
For JYP, meanwhile, the victory offers an important boost. Despite their inconsistent recent form, their position within touching distance of the league leaders means they remain genuine contenders in an increasingly competitive Liiga title race.
