It is September 2025, and Kimi Antonelli is enduring a difficult spell during his rookie Formula 1 season after an encouraging start. The teenager heads into his first Italian Grand Prix with an uncompetitive car and little pressure to deliver. His maiden home race is far from disastrous as he finishes ninth, but he remains comfortably behind teammate George Russell, who continues to have the upper hand over his inexperienced teammate.

Fast forward 12 months, and the picture could hardly be more different.

Antonelli heads into the 2026 Italian Grand Prix leading the Formula 1 World Championship by 59 points after comprehensively outperforming his far more experienced teammate in a dominant Mercedes machine. In the space of just one remarkable year, the young Italian has gone from promising understudy to Mercedes’ leading driver and a genuine world championship favourite.

The sky appears to be the limit for a driver who became the youngest in history to lead an F1 world championship when he moved to the top of the standings in Japan earlier this season. Six months later, Antonelli remains at the summit and has extended his advantage after continuing to improve race after race.

Following an inconsistent debut campaign, the 2026 version of Antonelli looks more mature, composed and confident. Mistakes have still crept into his performances, but the championship leader is increasingly showing exactly why Toto Wolff took the gamble on him as the replacement for seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton.

Wolff repeatedly backed his young protege through the difficult moments of 2025, and that faith is now being rewarded.

Antonelli’s transformation from future star to established F1 frontrunner has been remarkable, but his rapid rise is certainly no fluke. His extraordinary speed and natural ability have been evident since his earliest days in motorsport.

Antonelli’s extraordinary speed was evident from the beginning

It was clear from an early age that Antonelli possessed something special. He began karting at just five years old and quickly developed a reputation for winning wherever he competed.

His father, Marco Antonelli, first realised his son’s remarkable potential when Kimi was only 10. The youngster was given control of the steering wheel of a Lamborghini around the Adria circuit in north-eastern Italy, while his father handled the gears and brakes.

The experience left a lasting impression.

“I couldn’t see the track because he was in front of me with a helmet on. I could only see beside me the marker panels before each corner – 100m, 50m,” Marco told BBC Sport in August.

As they gradually increased their speed, Kimi demonstrated remarkable control of the car.

“We started to drive, step by step, faster, faster, faster. In the end, I pushed like I was alone and I arrived at the braking point at the end of the straight, 320km/h, braked very hard and at the limit.”

The car began to oversteer heavily, but the young Antonelli remained completely composed.

“The car had a lot of oversteer. Kimi controlled the oversteer perfectly, then I went on the throttle, Kimi finished the oversteer, changed gear, and went.”

Eventually, Marco decided enough was enough.

“I said: ‘OK, stop, because it has now become dangerous.’ But when I saw the video, 10 years old, on my leg, oversteer, everything perfect, I said: ‘Maybe he has something special.'”

That early glimpse of raw talent would soon develop into one of the most exciting junior careers in motorsport.

Antonelli takes Hamilton’s Mercedes seat

By the end of 2021, Antonelli had already outgrown karting and made the move into single-seater racing in 2022. He quickly established himself in cars, dominating in Formula 4 before continuing his progress through the junior categories.

Very little seemed capable of unsettling the teenage sensation – a quality he is now displaying against the world’s best Formula 1 drivers.

Toto Wolff recognised the potential early and brought Antonelli into the Mercedes junior programme. After an impressive debut season in Formula 2, the Mercedes boss became convinced that the Italian was ready for an accelerated promotion to the sport’s biggest stage.

Replacing a seven-time world champion such as Hamilton at just 18 years old, with only one season of F2 experience behind him, would have been an enormous challenge for almost any young driver.

Perhaps inevitably, the weight of expectation occasionally showed during Antonelli’s rookie campaign.

Yet even through a difficult 2025 season, there were enough flashes of brilliance to demonstrate why Wolff had placed so much faith in him. Antonelli finished the year strongly, securing consecutive podiums at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix and Las Vegas Grand Prix.

Those performances provided a glimpse of what was to come.

Mercedes builds a rocket ship

Heading into 2026, Antonelli and the rest of the F1 grid faced an entirely new challenge as sweeping technical regulations came into effect.

The new generation of cars featured significant changes, including equal power targets, larger batteries and sustainable fuel, while their overall design was dramatically different from the previous generation.

It quickly became apparent, however, that the new regulations had created an enormous opportunity for Mercedes.

By the end of the opening practice sessions in Australia, a familiar sight had emerged: Mercedes appeared to have produced a rocket ship capable of dominating Formula 1 once again, reminiscent of the team’s extraordinary 2014 campaign.

At the beginning of the season, the pressure naturally rested on Mercedes’ more experienced driver, George Russell.

Russell had long been regarded as a future world champion and had established himself as one of the sport’s leading talents. After matching Hamilton increasingly closely during Lewis’ final years at Mercedes, many expected Russell to take full advantage once his team finally gave him the fastest car on the grid.

And he started exactly as expected.

Russell won the Australian Grand Prix, finishing ahead of his new teammate Antonelli. Astonishingly, however, that remained his only victory until Austria in June.

Antonelli responded in spectacular fashion, winning five consecutive races after Australia and rapidly establishing a commanding advantage in the championship.

The apprentice had suddenly become the leader.

Antonelli’s 2026 season is one of Wolff’s ‘biggest surprises’

Russell has occasionally been hampered by reliability problems, but even when those issues have struck, Antonelli has frequently been the quicker Mercedes driver. The Italian has also consistently had the edge in qualifying.

The general consensus is that Russell has underperformed relative to expectations, while Antonelli has been exceptional. Even on his teammate’s best days, matching the Italian’s extraordinary pace has proved increasingly difficult.

And if Antonelli’s meteoric rise has caught fans and pundits by surprise, they are certainly not alone.

Even Toto Wolff has admitted that the youngster’s level of performance has exceeded his expectations.

“I think the great ones, they know,” Wolff explained. “You say it needs one to know one. And I think that when you listen to Lewis or to Max last year, they already said that he has the potential.”

Wolff added that Mercedes had already seen the signs during Antonelli’s junior career.

“And that’s what we felt in the team too, looking at his previous records in karting and the junior formulas.”

But what Antonelli has produced in 2026 has still surprised even those who believed in him from the beginning.

“Nevertheless, to come out after the winter and just nailing it pretty much every single race is one of the big surprises in my professional racing career.”

Now Antonelli heads into his home Italian Grand Prix with an extraordinary challenge ahead. A major grid penalty for Mercedes means he will start from the back, placing his championship lead under genuine threat.

But writing off the young Italian has already proved to be a costly mistake during his short Formula 1 career.

He will have to fight his way through the field and navigate a huge amount of traffic, making victory an enormous challenge. Yet if anyone has demonstrated an ability to produce the unexpected in 2026, it is Antonelli.

Rather than surrendering championship points on Sunday, the runaway leader could yet find a way to extend his advantage.

Antonelli has looked like a world champion in the making since the moment his father first saw something special in him behind the wheel of that Lamborghini a decade ago.

Now, a sensational home victory against all odds could bring the dream of becoming a Formula 1 world champion closer to reality.
