Super-substitute Ferran Torres marked his Paris Saint-Germain debut with two goals as the reigning champions fought back from two goals down to secure a dramatic 2-2 draw against Rennes in their Ligue 1 opener.

The match was moved from the Parc des Princes to Rennes’ Roazhon Park after concerns over the condition of the pitch, and the hosts made a flying start in front of their home supporters.

Rennes took the lead after just nine minutes when Adrien Thomasson picked out Sebastian Szymański on the edge of the penalty area. The Polish midfielder produced a superb strike that flew beyond the reach of PSG goalkeeper Matvey Safonov.

PSG responded strongly and appeared to have levelled in the 21st minute, but Désiré Doué’s composed finish was ruled out for offside.

The visitors continued to search for an equaliser, with Ousmane Dembele coming close when his powerful effort from close range sailed narrowly over the crossbar.

Rennes, however, doubled their advantage in the 38th minute. Esteban Lepaul produced an excellent first-time finish into the bottom corner after meeting Przemysław Frankowski’s cut-back, leaving PSG facing a two-goal deficit before half-time.

Determined to get back into the game, Luis Enrique’s side increased the pressure before the break, but Rennes goalkeeper Brice Samba stood firm. He produced an important save to deny João Neves from the penalty spot and preserve the hosts’ two-goal advantage.

PSG made two changes at half-time, bringing on new arrivals Ferran Torres and Mika Godts. The visitors immediately threatened after the restart, but Samba once again came to Rennes’ rescue, making successive stops to keep out efforts from Désiré Doué and Warren Zaïre-Emery.

With PSG having won nine of their previous 11 Ligue 1 season openers, the visitors continued to dominate possession and pile pressure on Rennes as the match entered its final 25 minutes.

Their persistence finally paid off in the 71st minute when debutant Torres calmly converted after being picked out by a long ball from Fabián Ruiz, giving PSG renewed hope of completing the comeback.

With the momentum on their side, PSG came close to reducing the deficit just five minutes later, but Désiré Doué’s powerful effort flew narrowly over the crossbar.

The equaliser arrived shortly afterwards, with Torres rising to head home Fabián Ruiz’s inviting delivery and complete a memorable two-goal debut. His second strike set the stage for a dramatic finish.

PSG pushed forward in search of a late winner, but Rennes held firm to secure a valuable point. The hosts were unable to claim a fifth consecutive victory in their Ligue 1 season opener, but they will take plenty of positives from the hard-fought draw.
