Boan Venter set to make Lions debut against All Blacks

South Africa have released Boan Venter and fullback Quan Horn from the Springboks squad so they can represent the Lions against New Zealand at Ellis Park on Tuesday.

Venter has been named among the replacements and is in line to make his Lions debut after recently joining the Johannesburg-based side. The prop previously played for Edinburgh in Scotland.

Former Springbok loose forward Sikhumbuzo Notshe could also make his Lions return, with the back-rower included on the bench after previously playing club rugby in France.

The Lions’ other Springbok squad member, scrumhalf Morné van den Berg, has not been released for the fixture. His continued involvement with the national squad could increase his chances of featuring against the All Blacks in Saturday’s second Test in Cape Town.

All Blacks Continue Tour of South Africa

Tuesday’s match at Ellis Park is the final fixture of the All Blacks’ four-match tour against South African provincial opposition.

New Zealand have already defeated the Stormers in Cape Town, the Sharks in Durban and the Bulls in Pretoria.

The All Blacks also played at Ellis Park last Saturday, where they defeated South Africa 33-16 in the opening Test of the four-match series.

With Venter and Notshe potentially making their Lions debuts, the home side will be hoping to provide a stronger challenge against the visitors.
