La Roja aim to seal Top spot as Uruguay fight for survival

Two former FIFA World Cup champions go head-to-head in Guadalajara, with Uruguay battling to avoid an early exit while Spain look to secure top spot in Group H and continue their impressive defensive run.
Uruguay’s campaign hangs in the balance after consecutive draws against Saudi Arabia (1-1) and Cape Verde (2-2). La Celeste remain in control of their own destiny, knowing victory would guarantee a place in the knockout stages and could even see them finish first if results elsewhere go in their favour.
However, recent form offers little encouragement. Marcelo Bielsa’s side are without a win in their last six internationals (D5, L1), while their record at World Cups held in Mexico is equally worrying, with just one victory from their last nine matches played on Mexican soil (D3, L5). A second successive group-stage exit would also represent an unwanted first in Uruguay’s proud World Cup history.
Spain, meanwhile, bounced back in emphatic fashion from a frustrating goalless draw against Cape Verde by dismantling Saudi Arabia 4-0. That result extended La Roja’s run to three consecutive World Cup clean sheets and strengthened their position at the top of Group H.
Defensive organisation has become the hallmark of Luis de la Fuente’s side. The reigning European champions have kept nine clean sheets in their last 12 matches, and they are now within touching distance of completing a World Cup group stage without conceding a goal for the first time in their history. While a draw should be enough to secure first place, Spain will be targeting another victory to remove any doubt.
History strongly favours the Spaniards. Spain are unbeaten in all ten previous meetings between the nations, recording five wins and five draws, including stalemates at the 1950 and 1990 World Cup finals.
There are further trends that point towards an entertaining contest. Uruguay have won each of the last four matches in which they scored first, while both teams have scored in four of their previous five internationals. Spain, meanwhile, have made a habit of fast starts, opening the scoring inside the first 20 minutes in six of their last eight fixtures. Another notable statistic is that the half-time result has matched the full-time outcome in each of Spain’s last 12 matches, highlighting their ability to control games once ahead.
Uruguay will hope Agustín Canobbio can continue his recent scoring form after finding the net against Cape Verde. The winger has scored in three of his last five appearances for club and country, although he is still waiting for his first international victory when on the scoresheet.
Spain’s biggest attacking threat could once again come from Lamine Yamal, who scored against Saudi Arabia and now has the chance to become only the second teenager after Pelé in 1958 to score in consecutive World Cup matches. The Barcelona star also arrives in outstanding form, having found the net in four of his last five competitive appearances for club and country.
Uruguay will be without the injured Ronald Araújo and Giorgian de Arrascaeta, while Spain have no significant injury concerns heading into the decisive fixture.
Betting Analysis
Spain’s combination of defensive solidity and quick starts makes them favourites to take all three points. With La Roja frequently establishing early control before seeing games out comfortably, Spain to lead at half-time and win at full-time (Spain/Spain HT/FT) looks like the standout betting selection.
