Four-time world champion Max Verstappen arrives at Red Bull’s home Austrian Grand Prix this weekend with renewed optimism, thanks to a significant upgrade package and his determination to secure his first victory of the season.

The Dutch driver is also aiming for a record-breaking fifth win at the Red Bull Ring, having not stood on the top step of the podium since the season finale in Abu Dhabi last year.

Beyond ending his winless run, Verstappen is focused on helping Red Bull solve the performance issues that have affected the team throughout the current campaign. A strong result in Austria could also play a role in his decision regarding his long-term future with the team, including the possibility of a new contract.

Verstappen has enjoyed huge success in Austria, winning the race in 2018, 2019, 2021 and 2023, while also claiming victory at the 2021 Styrian Grand Prix held at the same circuit during the pandemic. No other driver has managed more than one Austrian Grand Prix win.

“Austria is a home race for the team and it’s been great for me in the past,” Verstappen said.

“We have great memories there. It’s always an interesting challenge. The corners are all quite different, so finding the right balance is very important.

“You need strong performance at both high and low speeds, good traction, and you have to manage the car’s energy and power well. We have a new package this weekend, and hopefully it brings us closer to where we want to be.”

The short, high-speed and picturesque circuit in the Styrian Alps, owned by Red Bull, is known for producing exciting races and could deliver another change in winner after Ferrari’s seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton ended Mercedes’ six-race winning run with his first victory for the Italian team in Spain.

Five of Mercedes’ recent victories came through teenage Italian driver Kimi Antonelli, who currently leads the drivers’ championship with a 41-point advantage over Hamilton.

Hamilton strengthened his return to form with a dominant performance in Catalunya, securing his record 106th career win. With four races scheduled across five weeks, the Briton now has a chance to build momentum in his pursuit of a record eighth world title.

Antonelli, meanwhile, will be looking to bounce back after suffering his first retirement of the season in Spain. He faces the challenge of maintaining his championship lead while dealing with expected extreme heat conditions and strong competition.

Red Bull and Ferrari are both bringing major engine upgrades to Austria, with Ferrari chasing a historic 250th Formula 1 victory. Mercedes will also introduce updates at the circuit, where George Russell claimed victory in 2024.

McLaren are expected to remain strong contenders as well. Defending champion Lando Norris won from pole position last year, helping the team secure a record seventh victory at the venue. The team will also evaluate an experimental rear wing during Friday practice.
