Nico Sciberras secured a superb silver medal in the Trap Men Solo event at the European Championship U23 Shotgun Events, organised by the European Shooting Confederation and currently being held in Wroclaw, Poland.

This marks the second time that Sciberras has won a medal at a Continental Championship, underlining his growing status on the international shooting scene.

Sciberras produced a strong performance throughout the competition, progressing through three elimination phases and a semi-final to reach the medal stages. In the final, he faced Türkiye’s Egemen Agca and, despite another impressive performance, eventually had to settle for the silver medal.

The Maltese team was also represented in the Trap Men Solo event by Abiel Cassar, who progressed through the second elimination phase, while Shazen Grech gained valuable international experience during the first elimination phase.

Strong performance in the Trap competition

The Malta Trap Team also competed in the Trap competition held on 8 and 9 August, with Sciberras once again producing an excellent performance.

He hit 117 out of 125 clays during qualification, comfortably securing a place in the final with bib number three. In the final, however, Sciberras was eliminated in the opening phase after registering 6/10 targets, finishing seventh overall among 40 competitors.

Agca Egemen of Türkiye once again claimed the gold medal after hitting 29/30 targets. Slovakia’s Timotej Toth took silver with 25/30, while Cyprus’ Grigoriou Giorgos claimed the bronze medal with 18/25.

The other Maltese athletes also put in respectable performances. Shazen Grech scored 104/125, while Abiel Cassar finished with 100/125. Competing for Ranking Points Only (RPO), Leetov Bonnici recorded 106/125 in his first overseas experience, while Luke Cassar registered 98/125.

Cassar narrowly misses Skeet final

In the Skeet Men category, Andre Cassar led the Maltese challenge with an excellent score of 117/125. Cassar narrowly missed out on qualification for the final shoot-off by just one clay, eventually finishing 12th overall in a highly competitive field of 46 athletes.

The Maltese athletes were supported throughout the championships by an experienced team. Bruno Gubellini served as team coach for Skeet, while John Mary Bugeja undertook official duties in the Trap discipline.

MSSF President Mr Sinclair Cassar served as Head of Delegation and also participated in various high-level meetings and ceremonial activities during the event.

Following their participation in Wroclaw, Team Malta will now turn its attention to another major international appointment, with the athletes set to compete at the Mediterranean Games in Taranto, Italy, scheduled to take place from 21 August to 3 September 2026.
