World number one Scottie Scheffler delivered a superb final-round comeback on Sunday, overturning Viktor Hovland’s lead to win the TOUR Championship for the second time.

The four-time major champion carded a four-under-par 66 at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta to secure the season-ending title. Scheffler began the final round three shots behind Hovland but steadily closed the gap before pulling away on the back nine.

The victory marked the 22nd PGA TOUR title of Scheffler’s career and earned him the $10 million winner’s prize.

“Today was a day in which I was fortunate to get off to a good start and then was able to make some birdies to kind of seal the deal,” Scheffler said after his victory.

He added: “Just continuing to battle, day in and day out is something that I’m very proud of… coming from behind and being able to win tournaments is a really cool feeling.”

Hovland, who was hoping to win the TOUR Championship for the second time after claiming the title in 2023, struggled in the final round. The Norwegian closed with a two-over-par 72 to finish at 13 under.

Scheffler immediately showed his intent with a brilliant birdie on the par-three second hole, leaving his tee shot just an inch from the cup for an easy tap-in.

He added another birdie at the fourth after sinking a 23-foot putt, although a bogey on the seventh briefly halted his momentum. Scheffler responded immediately, making birdie at the eighth to regain the lost shot.

Further birdies at the 10th and 13th holes moved him to four under for the day before another bogey on the 15th gave Hovland a potential opening.

However, Scheffler delivered the decisive moment at the 16th.

His outstanding second shot from the bunker left him with an 11-foot birdie putt, which he confidently converted to move two shots clear.

Hovland had an opportunity to reduce the deficit on the 15th, but his putt caught the edge and stayed out. Another birdie chance slipped away on the 16th when his putt curled just wide of the hole.

With two holes remaining, Scheffler held a two-shot advantage and remained firmly in control.

Hovland’s hopes were finally ended by another bogey, his third of the round, leaving him three shots behind and unable to catch the runaway leader.

The result was a disappointing finish for Hovland, who had produced an impressive five-under-par 65 on Saturday, sinking putt after putt to take control of the tournament. His putting touch deserted him in the final round, however, as he managed only one birdie.

Ryan Gerard finished third at 12 under after signing for a closing 72.

Rory McIlroy also struggled to reproduce his Saturday form. The Northern Irishman had surged into contention with a brilliant seven-under-par 63 in the third round but carded a one-under 69 on Sunday.

McIlroy finished among a group of seven players tied on 11 under, five shots behind Scheffler.

England’s Tommy Fleetwood, the 2025 champion, finished another shot back in a tie for 11th on 10 under alongside Australia’s Adam Scott and American Cameron Young.

Elsewhere, Justin Rose produced one of the day’s standout moments by recording the fourth hole-in-one of his career.
