Real Sociedad move could give Edson Alvarez a fresh start away from West Ham

While there has been little movement in terms of incoming transfers at West Ham United, the East London club have already seen several players leave the London Stadium this summer.

Crysencio Summerville, Mateus Fernandes, Callum Wilson, Freddie Potts, Niclas Füllkrug and Axel Disasi have all departed, while Aaron Wan-Bissaka could soon become the next player through the exit door, with the right-back reportedly closing in on a move to Aston Villa.

Now, Edson Alvarez could also be heading for the London Stadium exit.

Alvarez Was Once Considered a Major Coup

When West Ham signed Edson Alvarez from Ajax in 2023 for a reported £34 million, the deal was viewed as a significant coup for the club.

The defensive midfielder arrived during the same period in which former director of football Tim Steidten helped bring players such as Mohammed Kudus to East London.

Initially, Alvarez looked like an excellent replacement for Declan Rice, who had left West Ham for Arsenal. His early performances in the claret and blue suggested that the Hammers had found a physically imposing midfielder capable of filling a major void in their squad.

However, his form gradually declined, and that eventually led to Alvarez joining Fenerbahce on loan for the 2025/26 season.

The Turkish club ultimately decided against making the move permanent, while reported interest from his former club Ajax also cooled.

Real Sociedad Showing Interest in Alvarez

Alvarez is currently back with West Ham and training ahead of their first home game of the 2026/27 English Championship season against Charlton.

However, his stay in East London could be short-lived.

Real Sociedad have reportedly shown an interest in signing the Mexican international, with the Spanish club understood to be considering a season-long loan that could potentially include an option for a permanent transfer.

On paper, the move could make sense for everyone involved.

West Ham could certainly benefit from Alvarez’s physical presence and experience in defensive midfield, but his performances in that position have often looked laboured.

His lack of pace has been particularly noticeable when attempting to deal with balls played into his area of the pitch. That has also contributed to an unfortunate disciplinary record, with Alvarez picking up 24 yellow cards and two red cards in 73 appearances for West Ham.

Alvarez Is No Longer a Fan Favourite

Although other West Ham players have collected more yellow cards during the same period, they have also made significantly more appearances.

That makes Alvarez’s disciplinary record one of the poorest among the Hammers’ regular players.

He has also failed to establish himself as a consistent fan favourite at the London Stadium, meaning a move to Real Sociedad could potentially suit all parties.

The Basque club are understood to be looking for a defensive midfielder with the physical qualities Alvarez possesses. However, they will also need to consider some of the limitations that have affected his time in England.

One of the biggest concerns is his fitness record.

Alvarez missed 33 games for Fenerbahce through injury last season, with fitness problems, a hamstring injury and an ankle issue that eventually required surgery limiting him to just 12 appearances in the Turkish Super Lig.

He also made five appearances in the Europa League.

Ball Recovery Is One of Alvarez’s Biggest Strengths

Despite those concerns, Alvarez still possesses several qualities that could make him an attractive option for Real Sociedad.

His tackling success rate was above 50%, although he attempted just 39 tackles across his 17 appearances. His 25 interceptions were respectable, while he also recorded 18 clearances.

Where Alvarez really stood out, however, was his ability to recover possession.

He won the ball back on 81 occasions, highlighting his effectiveness when attempting to disrupt opposition attacks and regain control for his team.

The midfielder was also heavily involved in individual battles. He attempted 176 duels, winning 84 and losing 92.

Those numbers underline the combative nature of his game, something that could prove valuable to a Real Sociedad side looking to add greater physicality to the middle of the pitch.

His Passing Could Suit Real Sociedad

For a team that prefers to play on the front foot and move the ball quickly towards attacking players such as Mikel Oyarzabal, Alvarez’s ability to distribute possession will also be important.

Fortunately for the midfielder, his passing numbers offer some encouragement.

He recorded an impressive 87.79% pass-completion rate last season, suggesting that his distribution could be another positive aspect of his game if he can regain his confidence and fitness.

A Fresh Start Could Benefit Everyone

As captain of the Mexico national team, Alvarez clearly has plenty of experience and leadership qualities to offer.

There is an argument that a succession of injuries has restricted his consistency and gradually reduced his influence at club level.

For Real Sociedad, the hope would be that a change of scenery can help Alvarez rediscover his best form while, most importantly, allowing him to stay fit throughout the season.

If Sociedad can complete a deal, Alvarez could have the opportunity to rebuild his reputation in LaLiga and prove that he can still perform at a high level.

For West Ham, another loan spell may not be the ideal outcome, but it could provide the club with some much-needed breathing room.

If Alvarez can stay fit and impress in Spain, the Hammers could potentially find themselves in a stronger position to secure a permanent transfer in 12 months’ time.
