After suffering defeats in their opening fixtures, both nations know that anything less than victory could leave their hopes of reaching the knockout stages hanging by a thread.

Ecuador entered the tournament in excellent form, having gone 19 matches unbeaten before their opening encounter against Ivory Coast. However, a dramatic 90th-minute goal condemned Sebastián Beccacece’s side to a narrow 1-0 defeat, ending a remarkable run and handing them only their second loss in 21 matches under the Argentine coach.

La Tri now face mounting pressure. They have failed to win any of their last three World Cup matches, recording one draw and two defeats, and with a daunting final group-stage fixture against Germany still to come, this match represents a must-win opportunity.
