Egypt eye Group G glory as Iran chase historic World Cup Knockout berth

The battle for top spot in Group G takes center stage in Seattle as Egypt face Iran in a decisive FIFA World Cup clash. While the Pharaohs are aiming to secure first place with another victory, Iran are hoping to make history by reaching the knockout stages of the tournament for the first time.
Egypt head into the contest full of confidence after claiming a historic 3-1 comeback victory over New Zealand on matchday two—their first-ever World Cup win in four tournament appearances. It was also the first time Egypt had scored three goals in a World Cup match, leaving Hossam Hassan’s side on four points and within touching distance of the Round of 32. A victory would guarantee Egypt top spot in Group G, although even a defeat could still see them advance depending on other results.
Despite their momentum, Egypt will be cautious. They have failed to win consecutive matches in their last nine internationals (W4, D2, L3) and have lost their final group-stage match at each of their last two World Cup appearances.
Iran produced one of the tournament’s most disciplined defensive displays in a goalless draw against Belgium on matchday two. Fielding the oldest starting XI in World Cup history, averaging 32 years and 181 days, Amir Ghalenoei’s men frustrated one of the tournament favorites despite completing just 50 first-half passes—the third-lowest total before halftime in a World Cup match since 1966.
The Persian Cheetahs know that only a victory guarantees qualification for the knockout rounds, while a draw could leave them relying on results elsewhere to progress as one of the best third-placed teams. However, scoring remains a concern, with Iran failing to find the net in nine of their previous 20 World Cup matches.
This will be the first-ever World Cup meeting between Egypt and Iran. Interestingly, Iran have never lost to an African nation at the tournament, recording one win and two draws in their previous encounters.
Several trends could shape the outcome. Egypt have kept first-half clean sheets in six of their last eight matches, although ten of the last 12 goals they have conceded at the World Cup have come after halftime. Meanwhile, only three of Iran’s last nine matches have seen both teams score, and Iran have either failed to score or netted exactly twice in each of their last five World Cup games.
Mostafa Ziko has emerged as Egypt’s main attacking threat, contributing three goals and one assist across his last four appearances. For Iran, Mehdi Taremi remains the danger man, with five of his last six international goals coming in victories.
Egypt face late fitness concerns after Hamdi Fathy and Hossam Abdelmaguid were forced off through injury in their previous match, while Iran report no fresh injury issues.
Prediction: Egypt 2-0 Iran
Iran’s defensive organization has been impressive throughout the tournament, but Egypt’s attacking confidence and greater quality in the final third could prove decisive. Expect the Pharaohs to edge the contest and secure Group G top spot with a clean-sheet victory.
