Floriana and Valletta set for another historic Super Cup derby

The Maltese football spotlight turns towards another chapter in one of the country’s most historic rivalries as champions Floriana face FA Trophy winners Valletta in the final of the Super Cup.
With the two clubs being neighbours and eternal rivals in Maltese football, the encounter promises to be another eagerly anticipated derby, with silverware at stake and local bragging rights on the line.
Valletta head into the final as the most successful club in the history of the competition, having lifted the Super Cup 13 times. Floriana, meanwhile, have won the honour on just two occasions, in 1992/93 and 2017/18.
Victory would therefore be particularly significant for Floriana, as a third Super Cup triumph would see them move level with Sliema Wanderers, who have won the competition three times.
The rivalry between Floriana and Valletta has produced plenty of memorable encounters over the years, including some emphatic victories. The biggest winning margin recorded in the fixture is 6-0, with Floriana achieving that scoreline once, in 1950, while Valletta have recorded the same result twice, in 1962 and 2009.
The fixture has also produced some remarkable goal-scoring encounters. In 1955, Floriana defeated Valletta 6-1, a match which remains the highest-scoring meeting between the two sides to date, with seven goals being scored.
Now, decades after those historic encounters, Floriana and Valletta prepare to write another chapter in their long-standing rivalry. For Valletta, the objective is to add yet another Super Cup to their impressive collection, while Floriana will be determined to claim a third title and move alongside Sliema Wanderers in the competition’s honours list.
